Eventually, the subject stated he was no longer going to speak with officers and began to walk away, which was when BolaWrap was deployed.
On January 18, 2024, Illinois officers responded to a report from a Mental Health Service about a suicidal subject in possession of a knife, with information that the subject may have cut their wrists.
The challenge was immediate: The subject had a knife, indicated wanting to harm himself, repeatedly stated he did not want to be Tased, and confirmed he would keep the knife in his pocket while remaining on the phone.
The WrapWindow™ opened when the subject stated he was no longer going to speak with officers and began to walk away, presenting the critical moment for intervention before losing contact.
Deployment and resolution: Officers deployed BolaWrap as the subject began walking away. Upon securing the subject in handcuffs, officers observed he had cut his wrists with the knife, though injuries appeared superficial.
The outcome exceeded expectations: The subject was successfully secured and immediately transported to a Mental Health facility for treatment, preventing further self-harm while avoiding the use of Taser that the subject specifically feared.
