Murray State Uses WrapReality™ to Train Future Public Safety Professionals

"This type of training equips students and officers with confidence and practical experience before they ever encounter these challenges in the field." — Assistant Police Chief Christopher Pike

Murray State University in Kentucky has introduced a pioneering Virtual Reality Lab for its criminal justice and social work programs. This innovative lab, powered by WrapReality™, provides students and law enforcement officers with a unique hands-on training experience in real-world scenarios.

Recently unveiled, the lab places participants in immersive situations ranging from traffic stops and domestic violence calls to crisis intervention involving mental illness or substance use. The program is designed to strengthen communication, problem-solving, and decision-making skills, critical tools for future public safety professionals.

For Assistant Police Chief Christopher Fike of Murray State University Police Department, the impact of WrapReality™ is clear.

"WrapReality provides an immersive environment that goes far beyond what can be replicated in a classroom or role-play scenario," Pike said. "Students and officers engage in realistic, high-pressure situations where decision-making, communication, and emotional regulation are tested. The ability to repeat and debrief these scenarios in a safe environment allows for both immediate feedback and the development of critical thinking skills that have the potential to exceed traditional lectures or static training exercises."

The system emphasizes pre-escalation and communication as primary tools, with physical force only as a last resort. After each session, students participate in guided discussions to reflect on what worked, what challenges they faced, and how theory connects to practice.

The assistant police chief says the immersive environment not only strengthens skills but also builds confidence.

"This type of training equips students and officers with confidence and practical experience before they ever encounter these challenges in the field," Fike added. " By simulating real-world dynamics, such as pre-escalation, crisis intervention, or managing unpredictable behavior, participants gain exposure to stress factors they will face in public safety careers. The result is a stronger foundation in problem-solving, empathy, and professionalism, ultimately preparing them to navigate real-world challenges effectively."

For Wrap, the lab at Murray State University reflects a growing role for immersive training in shaping the next generation of public safety professionals.

"We're excited to see WrapReality being used in higher education to give students practical experience that textbooks alone can't provide," said Vic Pratt, Media and Communications Manager at Wrap. "Murray State University is setting an example of how immersive training can prepare both officers and social workers to approach their careers with confidence and empathy."

The Murray State University Police Department, in collaboration with faculty, is conducting simulations during select events and training sessions. This collaborative effort enhances the realism of the scenarios, reflecting the increasing overlap between law enforcement and social work in the real world.

"We are proud to see how this program is helping to shape future professionals in criminal justice and social work, and we value the opportunity to bring this resource to our students,” said said Pike.

WrapReality™ is one of several public safety innovations from Wrap Technologies, which also developed the non-lethal BolaWrap® 150 remote device and WrapVision body-worn cameras. By integrating immersive technology into education, Murray State is helping students step into the realities of public safety before they graduate, preparing them for the challenges of tomorrow with tools designed to keep both officers and communities safer.
